Looking for old or lost life insurance policies?
Looking for old or lost life insurance policies?
Perhaps, you are an executor to a family member’s estate, and don’t know where to look for any policies.
Or perhaps, you know you purchased a policy light years ago, but cannot remember where it is.
Sweetie-pie, my poodle, would like to help you sniff out those policies too. But I think you have a much better chance with the Government office.
Where to start
If you know with which life insurance company your policy is with, you can give them a call and they will issue you a duplicate or a policy certificate for a nominal fee.
If you don’t know with which insurance company the individual may have insurance, then a good place to start would be The Financial Consumer Office of the Government of Canada – Ombudsman Service Office.
There is no central registry or database in Canada that has a policy listing of all life insurance policies in force. Each life insurance company keeps their own records.
So you will need to give each insurance company a call. The Ombudsman Office has a complete list of life insurance companies, with telephone and contact information on their website. I would start with the most well known life insurance companies first.
Follow the link to the Ombudsman Office Insurance Finder button.
Much success in finding those old dusty, trusty policies. 🙂
